The black and white image on display is of a black sand beach in Iceland that is covered in
skid marks left by big jeeps, emblems of masculinity and power. The image is steeped in eerie
silence, the dust has only just settled. The bleak, black sand may appear gloomy and
monochrome but it tells a colorful history of its genesis. It is created when glowing red lava
meets the ice cold sea and is consequently cooled down very rapidly until it violently shatters
into grains of black sand. It is no sooner born than it is under attack from the vicious force of
the sea but in a country of constant seismic shifts and volcanic eruptions its life cycle is
ensured. Black sand is thus the offspring of the steamy relationship between fiery lava and
cold seawater. The black sand beach a place of reconciliation and conflict, growth and
erosion. The tire marks on the empty beach are a reminder of the omnipresent human being
in nature. We are living in the epoch of the anthropocene. There is hardly a place on the
surface of the earth untouched by human activity.

Every event, great or small is always personal. Every perception different.There are signs all
around for us to read, interpret and transfer onto ourselves. Life is a flow of an endless
succession of timeless, fleeting moments that we desperately try to hold onto in the form of
memories that we shape into monuments. We are desperate to leave a trace behind. It is
simply in our nature.

Nature shapes, creates and destroys in an endless loop and we humans are a part of it; not
separate.

この白黒写真には、男らしさとパワーの象徴ともいえる大型ジープのブレーキ痕で
覆われたアイスランドの黒い砂浜が写されている。砂埃が落ち着いたばかりで、不
気味な静けさに満ちているようだ。荒涼とした黒い砂は陰気でモノトーンに見える
かもしれないが、そこには色彩に満ちた歴史の成り立ちが秘められている。ギラギ
ラとした赤い溶岩が凍りつくような冷たい海水に触れ、急速に冷却されることで黒
い砂の粒子に粉砕される。黒い粒子になった瞬間から海の容赦ない勢いに引き込ま
れていくが、地震と火山噴火が常に起こるこの国では、必然的な自然のサイクルで
ある。燃えるような溶岩と冷たい海水との情熱的な融合によって作られた、黒い砂。
そしてまた、この黒い砂浜は和解と葛藤、成長と侵食が共在する場所なのだ。人気
のない砂浜に残されたタイヤの痕は、自然の中に偏在する人間の存在を示している。
私たちは今、Anthropocene (人新世: 人類の時代)を生きている。この地球上では、人
間の活動と無縁の土地はほとんど見当たらないほどだ。
些細なことでも大事でも、どんな出来事も人は主観で受けとめている。物の見方は
人それぞれでも、 私たちは様々な情報を読み取り、解釈し、取り込んで自分なりに
生きているのだ。人生は、時代を超えたはかない瞬間の無限な連続でありながらも、
それを必死に記憶として刻み込もうとする。生きた形跡を必死に残そうとしている
のが人間なのだ。
自然の形成、創生、そして破壊の無限なループの中、私たち人間もその一部であり、
切り離して考えることはできない。
